“They aren’t coming for lunch, are they?” Rock asked Jenny, who laughed.

“How well do you know that girl?” she asked, and Rock shook his head.

“I’ve seen her twice at the palace, but they do a very effective job of keeping her out of sight. Rules about girls. Getting through the greeting to the king and queen is hard enough. I’ll never understand all of their rules.”

“She wanted nothing but to go and see those horses,” she said. “That’s really all she’s here for. It was Persephone’s idea, all by herself, to offer to sell one, wasn’t it?”

“Don’t know which way I would have guessed, from what she told me,” Rock said. “But it wouldn’t surprise me.”

“Get a saddle set up, would you?” Jenny asked Rock, bringing out the food and looking around to find Yoseph where he was sitting with Marco and Ashley. “Can you bring them some food?”

“Yes, ma’am,” Yoseph said, springing to his feet and coming over to help her load up a basket. It was simpler food for lunch, mostly bread and cheese and meat, but it was hearty and it was some of the best simple foods you were going to find anywhere. Jenny was proud of it, and she didn’t think that more elaborate fare was going to have any more significant impression for the girl.

Rock took a loaf of bread and winked at her, going to get a saddle out of the tack wagon and setting to work on it.

He hadn’t been at the camp when Ruth had gotten here, but she’d left an impression on everyone who had seen her go by.

Rock hoped he got to speak with her before she had to leave.
